Review #1495 Inside Out and Back Again by Thanhha Lai

Review: #1495
Book: Inside Out and Back Again
Author: Thanhha Lai
Rating: two stars (out of four)
Release date: Feb. 22, 2011
Pages: 272
Publisher: HarperCollins
Source: ALA 2011

I picked this up at ALA because my roommate said it had been receiving a lot of buzz. And what was awesome was the publisher was HANDING OUT (aka FREE COPIES) of the hardback AND the author was there to sign it! Needless to say, I was pretty excited to read it. Plus it was told in verse and there aren’t enough of those in juvenile and YA lit.

I thought Lai did a good job of capturing the foreign culture and making it relatable to readers who might not be familiar with that type of environment. I liked the story and wanted a smooth resolution for the girl as she was dealing with these types of situations. While I did like this book and would recommend it, I was a little surprised to see it win a Newbery Honor. I can see why it won, but I probably wouldn’t have picked it.
