Book Review #988
Hitler Youth: Growing Up in Hitler's Shadow by Susan Campbell Bartoletti
Rating: four stars (out of four)

Brain washing is an amazing tool. This book literally gave me chills. I found it hard to fathom how these children and teens had grown up under the influence of Hitler and that they didn't think to question his judgment until it was almost too late. I thought the author did an excellent job of using stories of children who were Hitler Youth from the very beginning and stayed that way, to children who had always rebelled against the cause. There were also accounts of teenagers who had started out as Hitler Youth and then realized what they were fighting for. It was shocking to see things from the point of view of people my age or younger who were so invested in this cause. I couldn't even imagine fighting for my life and distributing secret pamphlets that spoke about the evils of Hitler at time like that. It's mind-boggling. I would definitely recommend this book, it opened my eyes to a part of history I hadn't known much about.
